How to Read Warning Lights
Dashboard symbols aren't decoration. This lesson decodes the 10 most common warning lights, distinguishes serious from minor, and walks through what to check before throwing parts at the problem.
The lesson
Red vs. Yellow
Red = stop driving now or you'll cause damage. Yellow/Amber = problem detected, drive carefully to a shop within a few days. Blue = informational (high beams on). Green = system active and OK.
Check Engine Light (Yellow)
Solid = a sensor or emissions issue. Drive normally to a shop and pull codes with an OBD-II scanner. FLASHING = severe misfire — raw fuel is burning in the catalytic converter. Pull over. You can destroy a $1500 catalytic converter in 20 minutes of flashing CEL.
Oil Pressure (Red Oil Can)
Stop. Immediately. Pull over and shut off. Driving with no oil pressure destroys the engine in minutes. Often confused with the oil-LEVEL light, which is amber on some cars — when in doubt, treat it as serious.
Temperature (Red Thermometer)
Engine is overheating. Pull over, turn OFF A/C, turn HEAT to MAX (the heater core pulls heat off the engine), and let it cool 30+ minutes before opening anything. Driving an overheated engine warps the head, cracks the block, and blows the head gasket.
Battery (Red Battery)
Charging system failure (alternator, belt, or regulator). You're now running on battery alone. Get somewhere safe — you have 20-40 minutes of driving with lights/AC on, longer with everything off.
ABS, TPMS, Airbag — the yellow trio
ABS = anti-lock brakes disabled (regular brakes still work). TPMS = tire pressure low or sensor fault. Airbag (SRS) = system fault, airbags may not deploy in a crash. None require immediate stop, but address soon — especially the airbag light before any collision.
Tool list
- OBD-II scanner ($25-$60 for a decent code reader; Bluetooth dongles + phone app also work)
- Owner's manual (decodes specific symbols by year/make)
- Tire pressure gauge
- Flashlight (for under-hood checks at night)
Safety — Read or get hurt
- !!Flashing check engine light = serious. Pull over and shut down to save the catalytic converter.
- !!Red lights = stop NOW. Yellow lights = drive carefully and address soon.
- !!An overheated engine can crack a head. 'Just make it home' has killed many engines.
