Measuring, Math & Marking

Bad measurement = bad cut = wasted lumber. This lesson covers the tape measure tricks, the carpenter's math you'll use every day, and the marking system that keeps things square.

Read a tape measure like a pro

The biggest marks are inches. The 1/2" mark is the next-biggest. Then 1/4, 1/8, 1/16. Read 'big mark + count over by smallest fraction.' Example: 5 inches + 3/16 = 5 3/16". The black diamonds at 19.2" intervals are for 5-stud-per-8-ft layouts.

The carpenter's pencil rule

Always mark on the WASTE side of your cut. The saw kerf is ~1/8". If you cut centered on your line, you lose 1/16" — small but adds up. Marking 'X' on waste side prevents confusion mid-cut.

Squaring with 3-4-5

Pythagorean theorem in the field. Measure 3 ft along one edge, 4 ft along another. If the diagonal is exactly 5 ft, the corner is 90°. Scale up to 6-8-10 for larger work. Use this to square decks, walls, and foundations.

Fractions on the fly

Quick conversions: 1/2 = 8/16, 1/4 = 4/16, 1/8 = 2/16, 1/16 = 1/16. Add and subtract in 16ths. 5 3/8 + 2 1/4 = 5 6/16 + 2 4/16 = 7 10/16 = 7 5/8". Practice until it's automatic.

Mark systems for crew work

Use crow's-foot marks (a V pointing AT the line) not dashes — dashes are ambiguous. Label both sides of a stud (TOP / BOTTOM) so it goes in the right way. Note grain direction with an arrow for trim.

Safety — Read or get hurt

  • !!Tape hooks loose by design — accounts for kerf when hooking inside vs hooking outside. Don't 'fix' it.
  • !!Always pull tape taut; sag adds measurement error.
  • !!Lock your tape before reading; a snapping retract bites fingers.
